History
Addis Ababa is a city with deep historical roots. These sites offer some of our favorite glimpses into Ethiopia’s royal past, ancient heritage, and cultural treasures.
- Unity Park: A well-curated space within the National Palace grounds. The guided tour through imperial halls and gardens is our top recommendation.
- National Museum: Home to Lucy, one of the oldest hominid skeletons ever found, along with fascinating historical and cultural artifacts.
More museums are worth visiting—see our full list for details.
Hiking
If you enjoy fresh air and scenic views, Addis offers easy access to forested trails and mountain walks just outside the city.
- Entoto Park: On Entoto mountain; Cool and quiet with long trails and city views, plus extra activities like horse riding and zip-lining.
- Gulele Botanical Garden: A vast area on the city’s edge—ideal for nature walks, though less developed in terms of signage or amenities.
Unwind, Sunset, Ice Cream, Light Shows
- Friendship Park: Ideal for a jog in the morning or for catching the sunset and the magical light shows in the evening (at 7pm). It's a great place to spend an evening or unwind. Families, couples, and friends love this spot.
Cultural Restaurants
Spend one evening immersing yourself in Ethiopia’s rich cultural traditions—live music, dancing, and food, all in one unforgettable night. Our favorite cultural restaurants.
- Yod Abyssinia, Totot, Haile Grand, or 2000 Habesha: These venues offer dinner with a show, featuring regional music and dance performances.
EthioJazz, Traditional Music & Good Vibes
Live music is a big part of Addis nightlife, with options ranging from iconic EthioJazz to traditional performances and modern lounges.
- Africa Jazz Village: Founded by the father of EthioJazz, Mulatu Astatke—check for live performances on weekends.
- Fendika: Traditional music and dance performances, especially vibrant on Mondays.
- Monarch, Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton, and Best Western: For lounge vibes with live music or DJs in upscale settings.
Coffee
Coffee isn't just a drink in Ethiopia—it's an experience. Explore how it’s made, served, and celebrated.

- Modern Cafés: Try single-origin coffees at stylish cafés—use our coffee map to guide you.
